10 Car-Maintenance Musts – keep your clunker chugging with this…
I’m the last person you’d want to text in the middle of the night to help when your car has broken down. Mechanical, I’m not. Know, though, that your car might not have broken down had you taken the energy, money, and time to maintain it properly. That much I’ve learned from the wise-cracking Italian guys on NPR’s Car Talk and Chippewa Valley car owners who responded to an inquiry about this very topic. In between were the car guys in my life: my dad, older brothers, old boyfriends, and certified car mechanics and technicians. 1. Regular Oil Changes Oil is really, really important. Remember the tin man in The…

2023 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 20th Anniversary Edition First Drive: On the trail to six figures
MOAB, Utah – The special-edition 4×4 universe expanded yet again this year with the launch of the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 20th Anniversary Editions. A lot has changed since we last saw a commemorative Rubicon, and consequently the new effort bears only a passing physical resemblance to the 10th anniversary model of 2013. Bigger tires, longer wheelbases and exploding MSRPs have seen to that. But are we better off for it? I wrote up the details of the Anniversary Editions back when they were announced, but the gist is this: You take a standard Rubicon 4xe or 392 (No V6 or inline-four), add a unique grille treatment, various badges and decals,…

The Jeep Wrangler is the one to pick if you are shopping for a no-frills SUV that can tackle some serious off-road terrain. Admittedly, it isn’t as refined to drive on the street as its body-on-frame rivals like the Ford Bronco and Toyota 4Runner. But it makes up for that in its off-the-pavement capability. The 2024 update gives a fresh face to the Wrangler and adds a bunch of goodies inside the cabin. It also expands its 4xe range with new models and adds more capability to the Rubicon trims. HOTCARS VIDEO OF THE DAYSCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT If you can ignore Wrangler’s lousy on-road manners, it should be…

As CT towns fight tire-dumping, environmental concerns arise
HAMDEN — For two decades, the reason behind the mass die-offs of coho salmon in Washington state remained a mystery. Then, in 2020, a group of researchers published a study naming 6PPD-Quinone, a tire-derived chemical, as the likely culprit. In Connecticut, where illegal tire dumping has been a longtime problem for municipalities, environmentalists say the practice also could threaten the state’s natural resources and have pointed to research like the coho salmon study as cause for concern. “(Tires) can leach some toxic materials into both the soil and the water,” said Rhea Drozdenko, a river steward with the Connecticut River Conservancy. Generally, pollution from the wear-and-tear of tires on…
