Main Street Auto Body open for business; new 10,000 square-foot shop set for groundbreaking soon at Fenn | Business
FENN — When Mike Hauger and Casey Zechmann first met, they were happily surprised to find they had a lot in common. Those common interests led to a partnership that has manifested itself into the business “Main Street Auto Body,” and continues to grow. The duo opened their business this year, utilizing Hauger’s home and farm shop. That will change this spring when they build a new 10,000-square-foot shop that will include a state-of-the-art paint bay. NASCAR issues largest team fine in history against Hendrick
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — NASCAR levied the largest combined fine on one team in series history Wednesday, hammering Hendrick Motorsports for modifying air-deflecting pieces last weekend at Phoenix Raceway. Hendrick was issued a combined $400,000 in fines — $100,000 to each of its four crew chiefs, along with four-race suspensions for the quartet — and docked the drivers 100 regular-season points and 10 playoffs points each. Although NASCAR has issued larger monetary fines and suspensions, the Hendrick penalties are the largest combined punishment for one organization. NASCAR’s winningest team said it would appeal. William Byron has won back-to-back races for Hendrick to give HMS two wins through the first four races…

Eating tires with your lettuce?
Car exhaust fumes pollute our cities and damage our lungs – but tiny bits of car tires when we screech to a lot, or which come over with wear and tear? It was assumed by the scientific community that these bits of plastic end up on the side of the round or down the storm pipe, but it turns out we are eating more synthetic materials that we want to know. A recent study from the University of Vienna found that lettuce easily and quickly takes up runner bits when growing and we ingest them in our salads. Although natural rubber is the made material used in tires, there are…

Jeeps for Peace: The British volunteers delivering life-saving 4x4s to Ukraine’s frontline
British pickup trucks have become surprise heroes on the Ukrainian frontline. The Ukrainian media has hailed these vehicles as the “rockstars of the Eastern front” because they are able to deliver supplies to cut-off areas and evacuate wounded personnel. Yet, the average life expectancy for one of these vehicles on the frontline is around 90 days. By then, it is likely to have burnt out or been blown up. This is why a constant supply of cheap vehicles is required. Why are British pickup trucks being used on Ukraine’s frontline? As lots of second-hand European pickups get exported to Africa and the Middle East, they are more expensive than those…

Plant-Based Rubber Innovations Fuel Sustainable Tire Growth
With future automobiles leaning toward autonomy and digital connectivity, the tires that carry those vehicles also are expected to upgrade their level of intelligence and electronics. However, the nuts and bolts of tires – their chemical and physical makeup – will also likely evolve via new materials and compositions. Materials science is an area of tire development where the industry has shown incredible ingenuity and perseverance in recent years. While petroleum, steel and various fibers will continue to be used in the composition of tires, many alternatives – soybeans, dandelions, tomatoes, moss and much more – are being studied and used in potential future products. For tire engineers, it’s a…
