It’s Easy to Make Your Own Windshield Wiper Fluid
During winter, you likely used a bunch of windshield wiper fluid clearing snow and salt. Now, as you drive through spring rains in Florida, you’ll need more. This easy DIY project will save you money.
Windshield Wiper Fluid: Benefits and Uses
Making your own wiper fluid has many advantages. It’s cheaper than buying brand-name fluids. The ingredients are easy to find and don’t cost much. Homemade mixes are also safer and better for the environment. Many commercial wiper solutions have methanol, a toxic chemical that can be deadly even in small amounts.
It’s easy to make your own, and you’ll get a solution that’s safe for both the environment and your health. Here are seven simple steps for making a methanol-free windshield cleaning solution at home.
How to Make Windshield Wiper Fluid
This is the recipe we prefer. To prevent your washer fluid from freezing in cold weather or on winter nights, we add rubbing alcohol to the mixture. This keeps the liquid from freezing when temperatures drop below freezing. We also recommend adding food coloring to make the liquid easier to identify and prevent it from being mistaken for something else.
You’ll also need liquid dish soap, rubbing alcohol, and blue food coloring.
- Use a gallon plastic jug to mix. Cut off the top for easy access. If you prefer a large bucket or tank for other uses later, make sure it’s cleaned well.
- Pour 3 liters (3 quarts) of distilled water into the container.
- Add 1 1/2 cups of rubbing alcohol to the water.
- Measure out 1/4 cup of liquid dishwashing detergent.
- Optionally, add about 10 drops of blue food coloring to help distinguish the solution.
- Mix everything with a paint mixer stick or similar tool.
- If storing the fluid, ensure the container is clearly labeled, has a tight-sealing lid, and is kept away from children.
