The Last Jeep Cherokee Rolls Off the Line At Belvidere Plant

    March 4, 2023 /

Photo: Scott Olson (Getty Images) After a six-year run at the Belvidere Assembly Plant, Jeep Cherokee production is coming to an end. What could turn out to be the last Jeep Cherokee ever rolled off the assembly line on Tuesday, as Autoblog reports, and the Belvidere Plant has gone idle. The future of the Cherokee is now in question, as well as that of the Illinois plant and the 2,300 workers affected by Stellantis idling Belvidere. Jeep Cherokee production winding down is hardly a surprise at this point: Stellantis had announced it would be idling Belvidere in December of last year. Sales of the Jeep Cherokee have been declining steadily…

Luck of the Irish: Insurance Costs Cause Country-Wide Racing Closures

    March 4, 2023 /

As of this quarter, motorcycle racing in Ireland has become, in the words of the locals, “as rare as rocking horse crap;” the country’s insurance premiums have taken such a spike that nearly all motorcycle racing efforts have been canceled – and, in a bitter move for the people, The Motorcycle Union of Ireland (Ulster Centre) has started a funding platform to get motorcycle racing up and going again.  How high are the figures, you ask? Coverage from BBC states that public liability insurance is now upwards of £400,000, with the motorcycle union being asked “to pay an excess of £300,000 in the result of any claim – this includes…

NASCAR star Elliott has leg surgery after snowboard accident

    March 4, 2023 /

NASCAR superstar Chase Elliott had successful surgery for an unspecified injury to his left leg Friday night, hours after a snowboarding accident in Colorado. He will miss this weekend’s NASCAR race at Las Vegas. Team owner Rick Hendrick told The Associated Press that Elliott was “just out of surgery” and “it went well.” Hendrick gave no additional details about Elliott’s condition or the accident. Hendrick is NASCAR’s winningest car owner and Elliott is NASCAR’s most popular driver. Josh Berry will drive the No. 9 Chevrolet on Sunday in place of Elliott. Elliott would need a waiver from NASCAR to be eligible for this year’s playoffs because he’s missing a race.…

From the Magazine: Column: Surprises galore in 2023

    March 4, 2023 /

By now, forecasters have come to terms with the fact that nobody could have foreseen 2020. The pandemic disrupted every reliable statistic, leaving experts with nothing more than economic fairy dust to bring make sense out of policy and bring the year into control. But, going into our current year, we have all the indicative data to assess outcomes. Persistent inflation, rising interest rates, manufacturing backlog, slowing GDP — flashing signs all around. Easy peasy right? Not so fast. In reality, there is little agreement on anything except for the fact that we may be heading into a recession. We can’t even tell at this point if the contraction will…

Zoning Board OKs variance over neighbor’s objection

    March 4, 2023 /

ROME — A use variance request by Rocker Automotive Rescue, Inc., owner of 6947 and 6943 S. James St. and Bones Avenue, to build a minor vehicle repair garage and towing and recovery business, was narrowly approved by the city Zoning Board of Appeals during its regular monthly meeting Wednesday. The variance request had already been tabled twice by the board — in December and January. Billy Rocker of Rocker’s Automotive Rescue, Inc., owner of 6947 S. James St., 6943 S. James St. and Bones Avenue, requested to use the existing building on the center parcel for a minor vehicle repair garage and a towing and recovery business, while towing…
