Plant-Based Rubber Innovations Fuel Sustainable Tire Growth
With future automobiles leaning toward autonomy and digital connectivity, the tires that carry those vehicles also are expected to upgrade their level of intelligence and electronics. However, the nuts and bolts of tires – their chemical and physical makeup – will also likely evolve via new materials and compositions. Materials science is an area of tire development where the industry has shown incredible ingenuity and perseverance in recent years. While petroleum, steel and various fibers will continue to be used in the composition of tires, many alternatives – soybeans, dandelions, tomatoes, moss and much more – are being studied and used in potential future products. For tire engineers, it’s a…

CU Denver Grads Find a Way to Turn Tires Into Sustainable Tiles
Thirty miles from Denver, you’ll find a mountain—but not one made of granite or shale. This one has earned the moniker “Tire Mountain” and is made up entirely of rubber. For two students in the College of Architecture and Planning (CAP), that garbage pile became the inspiration for their senior capstone project. Recently, Olivia Collier and Maslin Mellick, both 2022 master of architecture graduates, took home the Colorado Green Building Guild (CGBG) Student Project of the Year for the work they did in a studio class led by Professor of Architecture Julee Herdt. The class was tasked with creating a “Clean-Tech Manufacturing Facility for Sustainable Building Products.” This meant they…
